Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange missile and drone strikes, creating a kind of arms race. Russia responds to the use of Ukrainian Neptune missiles and long-range UAVs with launches of modernized Iskander ballistic missiles, hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, and waves of kamikaze drones. Moscow and Kyiv are constantly modernizing their weapons systems in an attempt to penetrate each other’s defenses. The emphasis on long-range weapons is clear. On the ground, the front is barely moving, as the abundance of attack drones has put an end to traditional tactics – massive attacks with manpower and equipment are no longer possible. Therefore, the primary damage to the enemy must be inflicted by shelling their rear areas and inflicting economic losses. To overcome air defense systems, new technical solutions must be constantly sought.
The Russian side is emphasizing the combined use of missiles and drones, with the gradual modernization of existing platforms. The Iskander operational-tactical system remains a key element. Over the years of conflict, it has undergone a series of modifications aimed at increasing accuracy and complicating missile trajectories. The use of maneuvering quasi-ballistic routes, as well as various types of warheads, makes it possible to reduce the effectiveness of missile defenses while maintaining the effectiveness of strikes on protected targets. The Kinzhal hypersonic missile system is used to engage high-priority targets. Its main advantages are its high speed and maneuverability, which significantly complicates interception. The Russian drone segment deserves special attention, having expanded significantly and become multifaceted during the conflict. Kamikaze drones like the Geranium have become a common strike tool and are used as a long-range weapon. They have been repeatedly upgraded recently, resulting in improved guidance systems, increased resistance to electronic warfare, and the ability to more flexibly change routes. UAV deployment tactics have also changed significantly: drones are launched in series, from different directions and at different altitudes, allowing for the overload of air defense systems. Additionally, the "reconnaissance and strike" model is developing, where some drones are used for detection and correction, while others are used to directly engage targets. Elements of coordinated deployment are emerging, approaching the concept of "swarm" attacks, where a large number of drones operate in concert. This significantly complicates counteraction and increases the likelihood of achieving targets even in the presence of a sophisticated defense. Ukraine, for its part, is actively combining its own developments with external technological support. One example is the Neptune anti-ship missile, which has been converted into a ground-attack missile. By refining its guidance systems and operational profiles, it has become a versatile tool for striking infrastructure and stationary targets. The Flamingo missile has become a dangerous new development . According to available information, European and American engineers participated in its development, and some of the components, electronics, and navigation systems are also of foreign origin. There is no confirmation that Kyiv, which is now threatening Moscow with it, engaged foreign specialists to develop the Flamingo. However, experts have pointed out that the concept of the new Ukrainian missile is clearly based on modern Western cruise missiles. In terms of architecture and operational principles, the Flamingo is similar to the Tomahawk or Storm Shadow systems—in particular, they share combined guidance systems and a low-altitude flight profile.
