At least 35 people have been killed and more than 1,200 demonstrators have been arrested in Iran during ten days of ongoing street protests, Deutsche Presse-Agentur reported, citing the human rights organization Human Rights Activists in Iran and its media network, HRANA.

According to HRANA, protests in Iran, which began in late December, have taken place in at least 88 cities, or 27 of the country’s 31 provinces. At some point, Iranian security forces began using force against demonstrators, particularly at rallies in smaller towns, human rights activists write.

These actions sparked a new wave of protests in major cities, including Mashhad and the Iranian capital, Tehran. Students from at least 17 universities across the country joined the demonstrations. In response, according to student media, security forces began raiding campuses.

According to media reports, security forces attempted to use lethal force to disperse the protest in Kuhdesht. In response, protesters began throwing stones, which may have led to the death of the Basij member.

On January 5, the Islamic Republic of Iran’s judicial system announced that no leniency would be shown to those arrested during protests. Meanwhile, Iran has executed nearly 2,000 people in 2025—double the number from the previous year.

The Iranian police chief announced a large-scale wave of arrests of protest movement leaders. He did not disclose the number of detainees. There were reports of numerous arrests across the country, including in the capital.

The same official stated that the people who incited people to take to the streets through social media have been identified, and some of them have already been arrested. The head of the judiciary, Gholam Hossein Mohseni-Ejei, stated that the courts will show "no leniency" to the "rioters." He also asserted that Iranian authorities "listen to the protesters and criticism" and "separate" the protesters from the "rioters." Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said the government would take action against those he called "troublemakers and foreign agents."

Iran’s Foreign Ministry accused Israeli authorities of "using any opportunity to sow discord and undermine national unity" after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed "solidarity with the struggle of the Iranian people."

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmail Baghaei also accused "some radical American representatives" of "inciting violence." Amid the ongoing protests in Iran, people in the city of Khorramabad have driven out the repressive forces in the city and seized power and executive structures. In the city of Sari, a police car was rendered unusable by protesters. Protesters block a road in the southern Azerbaijani city of Arak, chanting "Death to Khamenei."

The Iranian Teachers’ Trade Associations have urged security forces not to turn against protesters.

“You come from the heart of this society. Standing against the people is standing against your own future and that of your children,” the Associations’ Coordination Council said in a statement. “Refrain from staining your hands with the blood of the people and be certain that history will not forget these moments.” Taking a harder line against protests, President Masoud Pezeshkian has blamed them on foreign actors.

Pezeshkian claimed Iranians were being incited from abroad to create insecurity. He said authorities should not allow “enemies” to achieve their aims.
