Israel announced on Thursday that its army killed Islamic Republic Guards Corps navy commander Alireza Tangsiri involved in the blocking of Strait of Hormuz. Other key IRGC figures were also killed in the attack. “Last night, in a precise and lethal operation, the IDF eliminated the commander of the Revolutionary Guards’ navy, Tangsiri, along with senior officers of the naval command,” Defence Minister Israel Katz said in a video statement on Thursday. “The man who was directly responsible for the terrorist operation of mining and blocking the Strait of Hormuz to shipping was blown up and eliminated,” Katz went on saying. The Israeli Air Force conducted a nighttime strike targeting the Iranian port city of Bandar Abbas while Tangsiri was in the midst of a meeting with high-ranking officials of the IRGC Navy. According to the IDF, the operation not only resulted in Tangsiri’s death but also killed Behnam Rezaei, who served as the intelligence chief of the IRGC Navy. The military has not immediately disclosed the names of any other senior commanders who may have been killed during the attack. Tangsiri had held the position of commander of the IRGC Navy for the past eight years. The military stated that throughout his tenure, he was directly involved in assaults on oil tankers and commercial ships, posing a consistent threat to freedom of navigation and international maritime trade, particularly in the Strait of Hormuz and surrounding waters. Tehran has not yet issued any official statement regarding the killing of IRGC nay commander. If verified, Tangsiri’s death would add to a series of high‑ranking Iranian figures who have been killed amid the ongoing U.S. and Israeli military campaign that began on 28 February with coordinated strikes against Iran. In recent weeks, that campaign has reportedly included the killings of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and the regime’s security chief Ali Larijani, marking some of the most prominent assassinations in the conflict so far. It should be noted that Iran has partially closed Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint through which roughly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes, in response to escalating tensions with Israel and the United States
