Israel destroyed 16 aircraft used by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force at Tehran’s Mehrabad International Airport in a strike on capital Tehran last night, the Israeli Defence Forces has said. Video footage posted online shows the aftermath of the attack and captures the destroyed aircraft. The Israel Defense Forces stated that the 16 aircraft destroyed in the strike had been used to transport weapons to Hezbollah. The operation also targeted additional military infrastructure at the airport along with several Iranian fighter jets which, according to the IDF, represented a potential threat to Israeli Air Force aircraft conducting operations in Iranian airspace. “Aircraft loaded with weapons and cash took off from the airport numerous times and landed across the region for the use of the Iranian terror regime’s proxies,” the military stated.
Mehrabad Airport is located within Tehran’s city limits. The airport, which is owned by the Iranian government, is considered the busiest in the country. It only has domestic flights, in contrast with Imam Khomeini International Airport, located outside the city. Satellite imagery taken on Friday shows multiple aircraft were at the airport. Iranian state media is also reporting some parts of the airport have been targeted. It comes after the Israeli military said it was launching a "broad-scale new wave of strikes" in the country. It previously targeted the airport on 4 March, saying its strikes dismantled defence and detection systems that were a threat to the Israeli Air Force, which included the helicopter manufacturing section of the airport. Mehrabad is dual use. The IRGC air transport division operates from the same runways Iran Air uses for domestic flights. Military cargo moves through the same terminals where families board flights. That dual use is not a flaw. It is a deliberate strategy embedding military logistics inside civilian infrastructure to raise the cost of targeting it.
