Israel has struck Iran’s South Pars natural gas and its associated petrochemical complex in south Iran, Defense Minister Israel Katz said Monday. Katz stated that the strike targeted Iran’s biggest petrochemical complex, which he said accounts for roughly half of the nation’s petrochemical output. He added that, together with a previous attack, two major facilities – collectively responsible for about 85% of Iran’s petrochemical exports – have now been rendered inoperable. Video footage shared in social media shows a fire at the South Pars petrochemical facility, which was bombed by Israeli Air Force fighter jets. The petrochemical plant is located in Asaluyeh. The statement came after Iranian authorities themselves acknowledged that the site had been struck. The attack occurred against a backdrop of rising tensions: a prior Israeli strike on the South Pars complex in March triggered a strong Iranian response, with Tehran launching retaliatory attacks on oil and gas infrastructure across several Gulf Arab countries. Being the world’s largest natural gas field, South Pars is shared between Iran and Qatar. It holds an estimated 1,800 trillion cubic feet of in-situ natural gas. Monday’s attack was the second Israeli strike on the complex.
