The Israeli military released a video on Friday that it claimed showed airstrikes targeting rocket launchers and Hamas buildings in Gaza. According to Associated Press the Israeli army said in a statement that it struck an armed launcher responsible for firing rocket towards the southern Israeli town of Nir Am Thursday. The statement added that “secondary explosions were observed, indicating the presence of multiple rockets prepared for launch toward Israeli territory”. The military said that the air force also targeted several facilities used by Hamas inside Gaza City. Israel said early Friday that it plans to take over Gaza City in another escalation of its 22-month war with Hamas. The decision, taken after a late-night meeting of top officials, came despite mounting international calls to end the war and protests by many in Israel who fear for the remaining hostages held by Hamas. Hamas-led militants abducted 251 people and killed around 1,200 in the Oct. 7, 2023, attack that triggered the war. Most of the hostages have been released in ceasefires or other deals but 50 remain inside Gaza, around 20 of them believed by Israel to be alive. Israel’s military offensive has killed over 61,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many were fighters or civilians. The ministry is part of the Hamas-run government and staffed by medical professionals.
