The United States Navy has been tasked with a new mission of locating and neutralizing Iranian sea mines in the Strait of Hormuz before they can disrupt global oil shipments and worsen the energy crisis, Politico reported, citing official familiar with the operation. US military intelligence assesses that some Iranian mines are likely already in the water. While joint operations by the US and Israel have reduced Iran’s stockpiles, Tehran is still believed to possess thousands of mines. Any successful strike on a commercial vessel could severely hinder – or even halt – tanker traffic through the strait. More than a dozen U.S. warships are currently operating in and around the Persian Gulf, with additional forces en route. Their primary mission is to enforce a naval blockade of Iranian vessels ordered by U.S. President Donald Trump, while also conducting mine countermeasure operations using ships, helicopters, and underwater drones. Reinforcements expected in the region include: two Avenger-class mine countermeasure ships – USS Chief and USS Pioneer – recently deployed from Singapore; boxer amphibious ready group, carrying roughly 2,200 Marines; three littoral combat ships based in Bahrain equipped for mine warfare. Once assembled, the U.S. naval presence in the area is expected to exceed 20 ships, with around 5,000 Marines at sea. Retired Navy officer Steven Wills of the U.S. Navy League compared mine clearance to “picking dandelions,” noting that while safe paths can be created, they can easily be re-mined by small Iranian vessels – making the effort continuous and resource-intensive. So far, no mines have been detected by U.S. forces, but commercial traffic in the strait has sharply declined as shipping companies take precautionary measures. Meanwhile, Admiral Brad Cooper, head of United States Central Command, confirmed that efforts are underway to establish a maritime corridor. He said a designated safe route would soon be shared with the shipping industry to restore confidence and ensure the steady flow of trade. Iran’s arsenal includes bottom mines, moored mines that float below the surface, and drifting mines carried by currents. To detect them, U.S. forces are deploying advanced underwater drones such as Knifefish and Kingfish, which use sonar to scan the seabed and identify suspicious objects.
