Language, faith, memory: How Russia tried to erase Eastern Europe | How We Got Here

The 1863 insurrection against Russia was not just "a little local difficulty" but had European ramifications. It failed but what lasting legacy did it leave on Eastern Europe?

The January Uprising of 1863 is often remembered as a Polish national revolt. However, it was actually part of a much broader confrontation between the Russian Empire and the societies of Central and Eastern Europe.

We examine how imperial rule shaped everyday life in Poland, Lithuania, Belarus, and Ukraine in the decades before the uprising. Language policy, religious pressure, administrative control, and military colonization were used to weaken local identities and integrate these regions into the Tsarist state.

We are joined by Pavel Usov, an analyst at the Centre for Eastern European Studies at the University of Warsaw.
