Firefighters evacuated thousands of people from their homes overnight in Tuscany as they worked to put out a forest fire on Mt. Faeta. According to Associated Press a firefighter statement said they evacuated people living around the town of Asciano. Overnight teams used special drones with termo-cameras to monitor the fires and then brought in three water-dropping Canadair planes at dawn to help extinguish the fires. By midday on Friday, firefighters had five Canadair planes and three water-dropping helicopters working to put out the blaze. Strong winds have been spreading the blaze which firefighters began battling on Thursday. Wildfires have broken out at several locations in the Netherlands in recent days, including at military firing ranges where troops were training, as the nation endures dry and windy weather that has created ideal conditions for blazes to rip through parched countryside. One of the biggest blazes was at a military range near the small town of Weert close to the Dutch border with Belgium.
Authorities evacuated a small airfield as a precaution. There were no reports of any injuries caused by the fires. Earlier in the week, a major fire broke out in sandy heathland at the Artillery Firing Range near the town of Epe, some 90 kilometers (55 miles) east of Amsterdam. On Wednesday, smoke from that fire forced the closure of a nearby highway and drifted all the way to the Dutch capital. The Defense Ministry has been using Chinook transport helicopters equipped with huge water carriers to fight the fires.
On Friday firefighters from France and Germany were helping tackle what remained of the fires.
