The Russian army still lacks an effective means of punishing commanders who send false reports "upstream," such as "advance" announcements of the occupation of territories in the Northern Military District. This was stated by Russian military journalist Alexander Sladkov. According to him, such "reports" lead to unjustified losses of personnel.
“Prison! If a commander knowingly reports false information to a higher-up, in peacetime it’s five years straight, no question about it. In wartime, it’s six years. I’ve long thought that’s the way to do it: if it’s knowingly false, it’s a court-martial and off you go, six”, Sladkov suggested.
He added that such a practice doesn’t currently exist in the Russian army. Often, errant commanders are simply transferred to other positions, even though everyone knows they’ve blatantly lied.
However, as Sladkov clarified, there are cases where, on the contrary, they’re reluctant to report the capture of populated areas to their superiors.
“I want to speak out in defense of the combat generals and commanders who are using this information. This isn’t about lying to deceive. They’re purging what they’ve already captured, and they’re not rushing to report it”, " the journalist emphasized.
Summing up, Alexander Sladkov emphasizes that punishment for lying in the army must be inevitable. “As for the lies, which are obviously false and also burdened with great consequences associated with our losses, with our great inconvenience in maneuvering – for this we must imprison”, the war correspondent summed up. At present lower-ranking officers deceive generals, and generals deceive Vladimir Putin.
