A Russian helicopter was shot down in Mali on Saturday as the country’s Tuareg rebel forces are attacking the Russian “Africa Corps” and the Malian army. The downed helicopter was reportedly carrying Russian mercenaries on board. Apart from downing a Russian helicopter, Tuareg rebel forces have also blown up the building of the country’s defense minister. Residents and authorities reported a possible coordinated assaults in the capital and other cities. Explosions are currently being heard near the international airport in Bamako, the capital of Mali. According to reports, JNIM and FLA militant groups are advancing towards the capital Bamako. Fighting is taking place in the town of Kati on the outskirts of the capital, as well as in Kidal, where a base of the Russian “Africa Corps” is located. Militants have reportedly seized several suburbs of Bamako, where forces from the Russian Defense Ministry’s Africa Corps are stationed. The attacks have spread across the country. An Associated Press journalist in Bamako heard sustained heavy weapons and automatic rifle gunfire coming from Modibo Keïta International Airport, around 15 kilometers from the city center, and saw a helicopter over nearby neighborhoods. The airport is adjacent to an air base used by Mali’s air force. A resident living near the airport also reported gunfire and three helicopters patrolling overhead. Residents in other cities in Mali reported gunfire and blasts on Saturday morning, suggesting a possible coordinated attack by armed groups. Gunmen entered the northeastern city of Kidal, taking control of some neighborhoods and leading to gunfire exchanges with the army, a former mayor of Kidal told AP over the phone. He spoke on condition of anonymity out of fear for his safety.
