Polish government ministers on Wednesday allowed journalists to visit the fortified frontier at Polowce–Peschatka, a remote border crossing normally sealed off from public view.

According to Associated Press the visit offered a rare glimpse of heavy fortifications and surveillance systems in a region where access is typically restricted to within 200 metres.

The event, marking two years since the government took office, was led by Interior Minister Tomasz Siemoniak and Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk.

The ministers said the invitation aimed to demonstrate how Poland has reinforced its defenses amid growing regional tensions and the ongoing threat of hybrid warfare on the European Union’s eastern frontier.

Standing before a stretch of barbed wire and electronic monitoring towers, Siemoniak said the visit underscored the government’s commitment to border security.

"It’s no coincidence that we’re here at the border, so we can say that our border is secure, our border is well-protected," Siemoniak said.

"We have a truly effective barrier, with an estimated 98% containment rate. This year alone, we’ve thwarted over 28,000 attempts to illegally cross our border," he added.

The fortified zone along Poland’s border with Belarus was built after thousands of migrants, mostly from the Middle East and Africa, attempted to enter the EU through Belarus in 2021.

For the past few years, EU authorities have accused authoritarian Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko of weaponizing migration by luring people to his country to find an easier entry point into the bloc than the more dangerous routes across the Mediterranean Sea.

Siemoniak also warned of new security challenges facing Europe.

Tomczyk highlighted the scale of Poland’s military spending and the government’s effort to strengthen deterrence, saying "no other NATO country spends this much on its security as a share of gross domestic product."

He added that countries invests in the army so that it "will have the strength to repel any aggression, should one ever occur."
