Ukraine launched six FP-5 “Flamingo” missiles at a Russian military facility near Kotluban town in Russia’s Volgograd region, 400 km from the state border of Ukraine on the night leading to February 12. The struck facility is an ammunition storage base of a Russian military unit 57229-51. Video footage released in social media captures moments of the strike. Following the strike, authorities ordered the evacuation of the nearby town of Kotluban, about one km from the depot. The extent of damage to the arsenal is currently unknown, while it is possible to estimate how much ammunition could have been stored there based on its design. FP-5 “Flamingo” is a ground-launched missile developed by Ukraine’s Fire Point defence firm. Thursday’s attack marked the second successful official use of the FP-5 “Flamingo”. The second confirmed operational deployment suggests that the Ukrainian cruise missile may have undergone a significant upgrade, potentially enhancing its ability to penetrate Russian air defence and electronic warfare systems. The targeted facility, which is the arsenal belonging to the Main Missile and Artillery Directorate of the Russian Defence Ministry covers an area of around two square kilometers and contains over 90 separate ammunition storage sites. Based on the layout of comparable GRAU storage facilities, for example, the 51st arsenal, which covers 3.5 square kilometres and can hold 264,000 tons. The Kotluban arsenal was probably built to store roughly 150,000 tons of ammunition. The exact number of shells stored at the site, their specific types, and other details are not publicly known. It is also possible that the arsenal held either less ammunition than usual or, alternatively, more than its standard load. What is clear is that the facility was in active use, as Ukrainian Defense Forces have targeted it multiple times. Reported strikes took place on November 16 and 24, 2023, and again on March 8, 2024, although local authorities had not previously announced any evacuations of nearby residents. This marks the second successful strike on a GRAU arsenal by Ukraine since the start of 2026. The current wave of attacks began with a strike on the 100th GRAU arsenal near the town of Neya in Russia’s Kostroma region.
