The Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine conducted a comprehensive special operation against the Akhmat special forces unit, resulting in the Russian unit suffering its heaviest losses since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, Moscow Times reports. According to the Main Intelligence Directorate, in early 2025, Ukrainian intelligence recruited a serviceman named “Akhmat,” who subsequently planted a listening device at headquarters, transmitted via drone. Over three months—from February to April 2026—Using the intelligence obtained, Ukrainian forces consistently disrupted enemy assaults. According to intelligence, “Akhmat” lost 41 men killed, 87 wounded, and over a hundred missing. The agent also destroyed or damaged over 160 armored vehicles and motor vehicles, over 25 drones, communications equipment, electronic warfare systems, and weapons and fuel depots. A listening device was installed in the Akhmat command staff meeting room. The unit’s commander, Apti Alaudinov, deputy head of the Main Military-Political Directorate of the Russian Ministry of Defense, also came under the GUR’s scrutiny. The operation took place in the Sumy direction and was carried out by the GUR unit “Shamanbat,” which includes supporters of Ichkerian independence, together with the 104th Separate Territorial Defense Brigade “Gorin.” Russian offensive attempts on this sector of the front began in February 2026, as part of Vladimir Putin’s order to create a “buffer zone.” After the operation, the agent was successfully escorted to Ukrainian-controlled territory. Commenting on the results, Shamanbat commander Abdul Khakim addressed his fellow countrymen in Chechen: “When you were sent to Sumy Oblast, we knew about your assigned tasks. We were aware of everything—the 15 villages you attempted to occupy, and the methods you used to do so.” He also reiterated that Ukrainians had done nothing wrong to Chechnya and called on Chechens to defect to Ukraine. Recall, chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov reported that since the start of hostilities in Ukraine, more than 70,000 people from the republic have been sent to the conflict zone. "The Chechen Republic continues to actively participate in the special operation. But Akhmed Zakayev, a statesman and political figure in the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria and head of the government of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria in exile, says that within various Ukrainian Defense Forces, including the Ukrainian Armed Forces, there are several different units affiliated with the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria. Chechens and possibly Ingush and Dagestanis serve there. They have assumed great responsibility and are willing to pay the price in blood. “But there’s also the issue of the Caucasus, the issue of Chechnya, Dagestan, and Ingushetia. We all hoped that they would react a little differently to Russia’s aggression against Ukraine”, he adds. He recalls that president Zelenskyy signed a decree establishing the Foreign Legion. “And practically from that moment on, we signed an interdepartmental agreement, the Ministry of Defense signed an agreement, and we began actively engaging in Ukraine. And today, there are five units in the ranks of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in various structures—from the Chechens. Five battalions and five units. We have practically restored and are reviving the armed forces of the Chechen Republic here today. Because our Minister of Defense is permanently based here. As Prime Minister and as the head of the public committee for de-occupation, I spend most of my time in Ukraine. Our units are here; we are very closely integrated into the Ukrainian Armed Forces and interact with them. We are a role model for other nations today. But for the Caucasus to be liberated, we must first recognize the legitimate structures of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, which exists today, if we want other nations to follow in our footsteps and, like us, actively engage in the defense of Ukrainians. Because it’s their defense—they’re defending the Chechens here, the Ingush, and the Dagestanis. Anyone who’s on Ukraine’s side today isn’t working for Ukraine; they’re working for themselves. Because they understand that only a victory, a military victory for Ukraine, can guarantee them security, freedom, and independence. And that’s why, when I appeal to people from the Caucasus and others, calling on them to defend Ukrainians, I always say: defend yourselves”, he says.
