Russian military propagandists are increasingly vocal about the situation on the front lines after the Russian army began experiencing serious communications problems. Even Russian Z-channels have begun publishing videos from the Ukrainian Armed Forces , exposing Russian audiences to the colossal problem the occupiers are facing at the front. The footage is commented on by a major Russian channel , "Military Informant."
The footage shows Russian soldiers climbing a high tower to install a WiFi module and establish a communications "bridge" for their unit. A Ukrainian drone spots them and attacks them from high above. The footage shows how their attempt to "fix the connection manually" turns into an instant aerial hunt.
When secure communications are insufficient, Russian units resort to improvised solutions. They install equipment on towers, rooftops, and masts. This isn’t "technical work"; it’s simply stepping into harm’s way: you’re most visible at altitude, and a drone doesn’t need to perform complex maneuvers on the ground.
Recall, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s Main Directorate of Intelligence intercepted a conversation among Russian soldiers in which they complain about the poor quality of communications after Starlink satellite terminals were shut down. As a result, the Russians are forced to seek alternatives, but the quality of existing communications systems cannot compete with Western technologies. Even with the available alternatives, using them on the front remains problematic due to channel instability and limited coverage.
“The stoppage of Starlink operations among the aggressors has already led to serious problems with the interaction of units, logistics, and the use of unmanned systems of various types – from ground to aerial”, says Main Directorate of Intelligence, Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
As media As reported, citing adviser to the Ukrainian Minister of Defense Serhiy “Flash” Beskrestnov, restrictions on the use of Starlink terminals have significantly complicated coordination of Russian forces and already affected assault operations on certain sections of the front. The Russians are seeking options to activate Starlink terminals on the front.
SpaceX, at the request of Ukraine’s defense authorities, has begun countering Shahed attack drones that use Starlink technology.
In this context, attention continues to grow toward further steps to restore stable communication on the front line and the use of modern technologies that could support Russian troops in combat conditions. The Russian army is trying to use alternative terminals operating through the Yamal satellite series; however, this system does not provide stable communication or video transmission. Due to the limited number of satellites, it cannot cover the entire front line, and the main resources of the satellite group are used to serve subscribers in Russia.
Intercepted communications of Russian military personnel indicate that even with such devices, the connection is often unstable and does not allow for effective data transmission to command posts. The Defense Intelligence notes that issues with Starlink have already affected unit coordination, logistics, and the use of unmanned systems — both ground and aerial. This complicates the interaction of Russian troops and reduces the effectiveness of their combat operations. All this increases discontent in Russian society and the army. It is not uncommon for this discontent to reach the point of rebellion.
