Before the start of the full-scale invasion, the aggressor country Russia had 15 thousand units of Soviet armored vehicles in its warehouses . However, now, according to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, approximately 11 thousand tanks have been destroyed. This was stated by military-political analyst, co-chairman of the public initiative Right Cause Dmitry Snegirev in an interview with Glavred.
According to him, the Russians are modernizing Soviet models of equipment. In particular, these are T-62, T-54 and T-55 tanks.
He also added that OSINT intelligence and researchers believe that there are just over 4,000 tanks left in Russian warehouses. Almost half of them are not combat-ready.
"And when the Russians say that they still have 1,500 units of armored vehicles, they are talking about restored Soviet equipment. In fact, their production capabilities allow them to produce a maximum of 100-150 units of the latest armored vehicles per year. And this is catastrophically little," he emphasized.
Snegirev noted that Russia still has a large mobilization resource. "If earlier there was data about 20 million people, now the head of the Foreign Intelligence Service of Ukraine has announced an increase of another 5 million people. And here we may have problems. The Russians will use the tactics of the Second World War, the so-called meat assaults," the analyst concluded. The first T-54 prototype was completed at Nizhny Tagil by the end of 1945. From the late 1950s, the T-54 eventually became the main tank for armoured units of the Soviet Army, armies of the Warsaw Pact countries, and many others.
The T-54 had thicker hull armour. The 100 mm gun fired BR-412 series full-calibre APHE ammunition, which had superior penetration ability when compared to the T-34 that it replaced. It could hold 34 shells and usually came with two 7.62 mm machine guns. Some models had a 12.7 mm anti-aircraft gun.
The T-54/55 is the most-produced tank in military history. The Soviets produced a staggering 83,500 tanks. The Poles and Czechs made 21,000 more. China cloned it and made sure North Korea, North Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia had as many as they needed.
T-54s and T-55s have been involved in many of the world’s armed conflicts since their introduction in the second half of the 20th century. Perhaps one of the most battle-tested tanks ever.
