At a recent public discussion, Putin again spoke about extending lifespan to 150 years. The occasion was provided by German Gref, who, in a spirit of courtly optimism, recounted to the president the prediction of American futurologist Raymond Kurzweil that "around 2032" humanity will be able to effectively aspire to immortality, writes "Agency." Putin visibly perked up and cheered on stage, remarking that technological progress "already allows us to hope for a very long, active life." His jokes about age also drew sparse applause.
"It’s much more pleasant to listen to futurologists and visionaries than to sober assessments from doctors who don’t promise Putin any eternal youth," social media users write. Moreover, the average life expectancy for men in Russia, according to the latest data, is around 68-69 years. Putin is already 73, and he understands that the statistics are not on his side. This isn’t the first time in recent months that the Russian leader has returned to the topic of personal longevity. At a parade in Beijing, he discussed organ transplants and "victory over death" with Xi Jinping, and after the visit, he demonstrated his interest in experimental biotechnology at Sirius, including the symbolic "rejuvenating strawberry."
For several years now, Russian officials have been actively promoting state programs to study aging. The program is overseen by 77-year-old Mikhail Kovalchuk , Putin’s closest friend and head of the Kurchatov Institute. The president’s eldest daughter, Maria Vorontsova , who specializes in medical genetics, is also involved in the research . According to The Times, in 2024, the Ministry of Health required specialized institutes to accelerate research into cellular aging, neurodegenerative disorders, and immune strengthening. The entire program appears to be an attempt to launch a Russian version of the "eternal youth project."
However, the medical community is extremely cautious about such claims. Breakthrough technologies capable of halting aging do not exist. Organ transplants do not make people immortal, and not a single Kremlin biotech program has brought humanity closer to the "frontier of eternal life." The irony is that, despite his ambitious promises, Putin is increasingly showing his age: reservations, repetitive phrases, and the traditional listlessness of long monologues contrast with the rhetoric about "150 years of active life." Scientists and doctors are cooling the Russian regime’s dreams, arguing that biology cannot be abolished by decree, and that aging is a process indifferent to rank and position.
