Both sides on the Ukrainian front are actively using a new type of drone—the so-called "waiting drones," which combine the concepts of an anti-vehicle or anti-personnel mine with a kamikaze drone. As Forbes reports, ambush, counter-ambush, and counter-ambush tactics are rapidly evolving.
The commander of the Typhoon drone unit of the National Guard of Ukraine, call sign "Michael," explains that behind the spectacular videos featuring the "waiters" lies complex preparation. "Choosing a target is the first step. We determine exactly what we’re hunting," the fighter says.
According to the military man, the pre-selected target can range from logistics routes to infantry patrols or armored vehicle columns. Radio intelligence and reconnaissance drone data are used to prepare the target, creating a database of enemy routes and movement times. The publication notes that such ambushes are typically carried out using fiber-optic drones, as radio-controlled vehicles lose signal when descending to the ground due to radio horizon issues. Furthermore, fiber-optic drones consume less power and are harder to detect. However, landing remains one of the most difficult stages. "Execution requires finding a location that provides concealment but at the same time protects the fragile fiber optic cable from being snagged or broken," says "Michael." Weather conditions create additional difficulties: rain and snow can weigh down the cable, and frost can cause it to freeze. Once deployed, the drone can remain in place for hours or even overnight. The key advantage is the element of surprise.
"Targets have only a few seconds to react after the drone is launched," the military officer notes, emphasizing that this is significantly less than with conventional FPV. At the same time, such devices also have disadvantages: due to additional equipment, they carry less charge. According to military estimates, up to 10% of fiber-optic drones are currently used specifically for ambushes, and this share is growing. This allows for monitoring logistics zones and creating psychological pressure on the enemy. Countermeasures are also evolving: both sides are attempting to destroy enemy "zhdan" drones while they’re still on the ground. Patrol drones equipped with thermal imaging are used for this purpose. "Even in ‘sleep mode,’ the drone’s electronics generate heat. At night, a stationary drone is a bright target for enemy thermal imaging cameras," explains "Michael." One of the main problems remains operator fatigue, which is caused by hours spent staring at a screen. Artificial intelligence may be a solution. However, fully autonomous combat drones are controversial. "While this could be technically achieved, it crosses a critical line – the human decision to select a target," the military officer emphasizes. As Forbes writes, this aspect of war, which outside observers pay little attention to, could actually significantly change the way wars are fought.
Future battlefields could be saturated with large numbers of intelligent, long-latency ambush drones, radically changing the nature of warfare.
"Future battlefields are likely to be teeming with large numbers of smart, resilient ambush drones," the publication says.
