In occupied Donetsk, the humanitarian catastrophe related to the lack of water is worsening. Residents of the city have been facing water supply problems for the third summer in a row: there is no water for weeks, or even months. People are forced to gather with buckets at the entrances of their homes to somehow collect water from water trucks, and drinking water is often replaced by rainwater.
According to locals, the situation has reached a critical point right now. As Maryana, a resident of the Proletarsky district of Donetsk, told RTVI, the water supply schedule exists only on paper – in practice, nothing flows from the taps.
The woman complains that calling water trucks is often useless: the water arrives when everyone is at work, or does not arrive at all. According to her, washing clothes becomes a real holiday, because the washing machine has to be filled with buckets, pouring water from above. And water for food and brushing teeth is exclusively bought in the store. Another Donetsk resident, Natalia, has the same problem. She says that the pressure is so weak that the water rises to the second or third floor at most. People who live above, especially pensioners or disabled people, find themselves in a hopeless situation . Their neighbors bring them water.
Meanwhile, instead of finding a real solution to the problem, the occupation authorities continue to make empty propaganda statements and shift responsibility. The head of the self-proclaimed "DPR" Denis Pushilin stated that the water issue will be resolved only after the capture of Slavyansk. He "thanked" Putin and Moscow Mayor Sobyanin for sending water trucks and emergency teams to Donetsk. According to him, measures are currently being taken: utility breaks are being repaired, and prices for bottled and imported water have been reduced. However, local residents consider such measures a mockery against the backdrop of the lack of water supply as such. Russian bloggers and Z-channels are already calling what is happening a humanitarian catastrophe . They are publishing videos of people collecting water in rainy weather, and in animal shelters, volunteers are seriously concerned that the pets will soon have nothing to drink.
Ukrainian journalist Yuriy Butusov emphasizes that now Russia’s true goal in Donbass is crystal clear. If earlier it was about "reunification of peoples" or "historical justice", now a simple fact is recognized: without Slavyansk, Donetsk will remain without water . "Now people are forced to leave the occupied part of Donbas en masse, and those who remain have to stand in shameful lines to get at least a couple of bottles of water 350 thousand people. According to the occupation authorities, this is the limit for Donbas, the rest must leave or die ," the journalist writes.
