As reported Ukrainian intelligence special forces unit destroyed two transport aircraft and two radar stations at an airfield in annexed Crimea. Krym.Realii investigated how this equipment was used and how its loss will impact the Russian army’s capabilities on the Crimean Peninsula.
Recall, on September 25, Ukrainian intelligence reported the destruction of Russian aircraft and a radar station in annexed Crimea. The corresponding announcement was published on the Telegram channel of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine .
The report states that the "Ghost" special forces unit burned two An-26 transport aircraft and also destroyed a surface radar station and an MR-10M1 Mys M1 coastal radar. On the annexed Crimean Peninsula, An-26 transport aircraft are based at only one airfield: Kacha, home to the 318th Mixed Aviation Regiment of the Russian Black Sea Fleet’s Air Force and Air Defense Forces. As of 2022, this regiment operated eight An-26 aircraft . Military analyst Tom Bike analyzed satellite images of the Kacha airfield for September 22 and 24 and discovered burn marks in two areas of the An-26 aircraft parking area. This is the second strike on the Kacha airfield in less than a week. On September 21, fighters from the "Ghosts" special forces unit of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense’s Main Intelligence Directorate shot down two Russian Be-12 Chaika anti-submarine amphibious aircraft, the Main Intelligence Directorate reported . Furthermore, an Mi-8 military transport helicopter was reportedly destroyed. Ukrainian intelligence did not report exactly where the two radar stations were hit, but judging by their purpose and video footage, the radar stations were located on the coast. A surface radar is a system designed to detect and track surface objects such as ships, buoys, and other floating craft, as well as to provide navigational support and improve maritime safety in low visibility conditions. It illuminates the surrounding area, determining the location, speed, course, and range of targets, enabling navigational tasks and collision avoidance.
In military use, this radar can be used to detect enemy ships and boats and provide target designation for them.
There are many types of surface radars, such as Bussol-SM, Nayada-5MP, Rubezh-PTN, Obzor and many others. The MR-10M1E and Mys-M1E coastal radars and their modifications are designed to detect, track, and determine the coordinates and nationality of surface ships and small, fast-moving targets in open and coastal waters.
These radars determine the coordinates and motion parameters of targets in relative and geographic coordinate systems, as well as transmit data to automated data collection and processing systems.
In his opinion, replacing the radar will not be difficult, since it is not the most expensive or unique equipment, but it will take some time.
