Three people were killed in Moscow by an explosive after two police officers approached a man behaving suspiciously near the site where a top Russian general had been killed in a separate bombing incident two days earlier.

In a message posted on Telegram, the Russian Investigative Committee reported that "two traffic police officers saw a suspicious person next to a police car. When they approached to stop him, an explosive device was triggered. As a result of the injuries sustained, the two police officers, as well as the person standing next to them, died".

It said it opened criminal cases under clauses dealing with the murder of law enforcement officers and the illegal trafficking of bombs.

Unofficial Russian Telegram news channels said the bomber was one of those killed and he detonated the bomb when approached by the officers. Reuters could not independently confirm those details.

The blast took place very close to where Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the Russian General Staff’s army operational training directorate, was killed on Monday.

"A person who was near the police officers" was also killed, the Russian Investigative Committee said. Russian state media agency TASS reported that "the suspect is also dead."

Russian authorities have opened a criminal case.

Forensic teams are examining the scene and preparing genetic, medical and explosive tests, officials said.

Investigators are also reviewing surveillance footage and questioning witnesses to establish how the device was detonated. Russia has accused Kyiv of being behind several attacks targeting Russian military officers and pro-Kremlin figures since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

While Ukraine has confirmed it is responsible for some of those attacks, which have come both in Moscow and in parts of Russian-occupied Ukraine, Kyiv has not commented on Monday’s bombing.
