Russian leader Vladimir Putin has not been seen attending public events at the Kremlin since March 9, marking one of the longest such absences from his schedule this year. According to media reports, Putin’s last confirmed public appearance in the Kremlin was a meeting on global oil and gas market developments held on that date. Since then, his interactions have been limited to meetings with regional governors, the education minister, and the head of Sberbank, as well as a Security Council session conducted via video link. Some of these appearances may have been pre-recorded, while video conferences could have been held from various residences rather than the Kremlin itself. For instance, on March 18, Putin chaired a virtual government meeting from his Novo-Ogaryovo residence in the Moscow region, reportedly from an office identical to those recreated in his residences in Sochi and Valdai. Agentstvo media outlet notes that this gap is among the longest periods this year during which Putin has not visited the Kremlin. The only longer stretch occurred in February, lasting around 12 days, while in January such breaks did not exceed six days. The outlet also mentions circulating but unverified rumors attempting to explain Putin’s absence. One theory suggests heightened security concerns in the Kremlin following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei in a US-Israeli airstrike in his compound on February 28. Moscow may have reacted with increased caution, potentially including internet restrictions. Another point raised involves speculation that Iran’s current Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei could be undergoing treatment in Moscow, alongside reports of intensified US efforts targeting Iranian leadership figures. Previous claims include the deaths of Ali Khamenei and senior Iranian official Ali Larijani, allegedly tracked through surveillance systems. However, no official evidence confirms any connection between these developments. Earlier, Russian media reported that Moscow scaled up security in the Kremlin after the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, with Putin fearing that his security might be compromised.
