Putin rejects compromise, threatens European leaders will fall | Ukraine Brief

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz suggested that Western troops could respond militarily to future Russian attacks, stressing that Berlin has exhausted diplomatic options in recent days and hours. The U.S. and European partners remain open to NATO-style security guarantees for Ukraine, though key questions – including troop contributions – are still unresolved.

Russian media has sharply criticized these diplomatic efforts, portraying the talks as an “escalation of the conflict.” Vladimir Putin has made it clear he will not compromise on his demands toward Ukraine, saying Russia is prepared to seize territory by force and openly calling for changes in European leadership.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy warned that Moscow is preparing for a prolonged war into 2026 and urged international partners to take the threat seriously. Meanwhile, Russia continues attacks on Ukrainian cities, including Wednesday’s airstrikes on Zaporizhzhia, dropping four aerial bombs, wounding civilians and damaging infrastructure.

Following a reported Ukrainian underwater drone strike on a Russian submarine earlier this week, satellite images reveal images of the Novorossiysk naval base before and after the attack.
