Ukraine is sharply increasing its medium-range strikes against Russian rear areas, and this is already changing the dynamics of the war. According to Reuters, citing individual Ukrainian military commanders, drone experts, and analysts, these medium-range strikes have become a key factor in slowing the Russian advance. President Zelenskyy stated that the number of such strikes in May doubled compared to March and quadrupled since February. In April, Ukrainian forces carried out over 160 strikes at ranges of 120–150 km. Robert "Madyar" Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Force, explained the rationale behind the campaign: destroying Russian radars and air defense systems at operational depth opens a corridor for long-range strikes against oil infrastructure and military installations deep within Russia. "The role of middle strikes is now decisive," Brovdy said. According to him, at least 129 air defense systems have been destroyed in the occupied territories since the beginning of the year. Targets include radars, Buk, Tor, and Pantsir air defense systems, ammunition and fuel depots, and logistics facilities. The results are already visible: Russia cut oil production last month due to attacks on ports and refineries. Ukraine attacked the Ryazan oil refinery, one of the country’s largest, and also forced the shutdown of Russia’s fourth-largest refinery, NORSI, and a facility in Perm, 1,500 km from the border. London-based RUSI analyst Justin Bronk explained the mechanics: deep strikes force Russia to disperse its air defenses further from the front, which, in turn, opens up opportunities for medium-range strikes against logistics and command posts. "The further you push the rear, the more complicated the logistics become," noted Ilya Mashina, commander of the "Vagabond" battalion.
Field commanders are also recording qualitative improvements. According to a commander with the call sign "Cousteau" from the 414th Brigade, the number of crews and platform types has increased significantly since the fall. Feedback from the front is now being incorporated into drone design within days, and some manufacturers are already delivering fully combat-ready vehicles. "Middlestrike used to be a one-time opportunity. Now it’s a systemic part of operations," summarized a technical engineer with the call sign "Symbol." Analysts warn that middle strikes alone will not turn the tide of the war, but will create a growing adaptation problem for Russia. Earlier, Robert Brovdi, commander of the Unmanned Systems Force and commander of the Madyar strike drone unit, spoke about the strategy for destroying Russian air defenses, the rationale behind deep strikes, and why a ceasefire doesn’t mean the end of the threat. According to him, Ukraine is systematically "breaking a corridor" through Russia’s air defenses. It should be noted that in recent weeks, Ukraine has carried out approximately 60 strikes on Russian oil infrastructure, disabling at least 21% of Russia’s oil refining capacity. However, the Ukrainian "deep strike" is facing increasingly effective countermeasures from Russian air defense systems.
