A recent "accident"—the former deputy minister of defense of the Russian Federation, Pavel Popov, was sentenced to 19 years in a maximum-security prison. As the saying goes, "one of our own has eaten one of their own." What was the sauce?
According to Ukranian politician Yuriy Fedorenko, Pavel Popov served Putin’s system faithfully for over a decade: he embezzled 30 million rubles during the construction of a park. At least, that’s what the investigation claims. This is the second conviction in criminal proceedings against four deputies of former Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu , opened during the full-scale invasion.
“The first of this cohort to be sentenced was Shoigu’s longtime friend and accomplice, Timur Ivanov . Last summer, he was sentenced to 13 years. The trial of another deputy former Russian Defense Minister, Dmitry Bulgakov, continues. Also last month, it was reported that Ruslan Tsalikov , the first deputy former Russian Defense Minister, had been arrested on suspicion of creating a criminal group to embezzle budget funds. In addition to Shoigu’s deputies, Yuri Kuznetsov, head of the Russian Defense Ministry’s Main Personnel Directorate, is also under arrest .
The stories are all similar—suspected of bribery and embezzlement. But these high-profile cases are just the tip of the iceberg, concealing a daily, brutal war between clans. This is evident from the bare statistics: last year, the number of criminal cases against Russian officials increased by almost 30%”, Yuriy Fedorenko says.
He adds: “Judging by the first months of 2026, this trend is only accelerating. Since the beginning of the year, 72 federal and regional officials have been placed under investigation. Clearly, Shoigu’s group and other "military gangs" aren’t the only swamp creatures being targeted for purges. Among those recently detained are regional ministers, vice-governors, and other "civilian fish."
On the one hand, Russian thieves and corrupt officials are even useful to us. One might assume that by getting rid of them, the Russian system would become more effective. But on the other hand, we see that they are being replaced by others. Honest individuals simply do not exist in this mafia-clan structure. Therefore, fears about a "cleansing" of the Russian government are unfounded.
This trend is a litmus test for deeper problems accumulating as a result of a war that Russia can no longer sustain. Catastrophic losses at the front, macroeconomic difficulties, enterprise bankruptcies, budget cuts, and the loss of foreign assets—all of this leads to a phenomenon biologists call a depletion of the prey base. Under these conditions, the alpha representatives of the swamp fauna begin to cannibalize each other.
We don’t know how long this snake will devour itself or whether it will reach its own head—several key Kremlin "elders," including Putin. But it’s clear they won’t be able to continue like this for long.
We, for our part, guarantee: the food supply will continue to diminish. The enemy’s combat losses will mount, oil refineries will burn, the quasi-empire will crumble. We will crush this nest of moral scum. Good will triumph over evil. We will win. Glory to Ukraine!”.
