Ukraine launched a record high number of air strikes deep in Russian territory over the past three months, increasing both the frequency and scale of bombardments. These attacks involve larger clusters of unmanned aircraft, often equipped with heavier payloads, while Russian air defense systems appear increasingly strained in their ability to intercept them. According to a study released Wednesday by the Ukrainian defense research group Oboronka, Ukrainian forces carried out 40 significant strikes in just the first half of March against targets located roughly 50 to 250 kilometers from the front. That figure represents about a 50% increase compared with the previous high of 57 mid- and long-range drone attacks recorded during the entire month of December 2025. In late 2025, Ukraine averaged around two long-range drone strikes per day against targets inside Russia, with some drones traveling thousands of kilometers to reach areas as distant as the Caspian Sea and western Siberia. By early 2026, however, that pace had roughly doubled, with about four separate targets struck nightly. At the same time, the size of the attacking waves grew significantly – from roughly 50–70 drones per operation late last year to between 100 and 200 in recent weeks. Between February 1 and March 18, 2026, Ukrainian forces launched at least 110 coordinated strike packages against a wide array of targets, including energy facilities, military units, ammunition depots, and defense sites. Notably, by March 2026, Ukraine’s long-range drone output had reached parity with—or on some nights even exceeded—Russia’s own drone strikes against Ukraine.. These operations often combine multiple elements, including crewed aircraft, intelligence from Western satellites, special operations forces on the ground, and waves of drones attacking simultaneously from multiple directions to overwhelm defenses. One such operation occurred overnight on March 6–7, when Ukrainian unmanned systems units used FP-2 drones carrying warheads exceeding 100 kilograms to destroy four Russian air defense systems in occupied Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions. The targets reportedly included medium-range missile systems such as Buk, Tor, and S-300V, along with a Pantsir-S1 short-range system. The Pantsir, a mobile truck-mounted platform specifically designed to counter low-flying drones, has become a priority target for Ukrainian forces. In February 2026, the SBU’s Alpha unit claimed that its operations had disabled roughly half of Russia’s operational Pantsir systems since 2025. Continued attacks through February and March reportedly destroyed additional units. By mid-March, Russian officials themselves acknowledged the growing challenge. Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu warned that the increasing range, scale, and sophistication of Ukrainian drone strikes meant that virtually no region of Russia could be considered safe, noting that areas like the Urals, previously out of reach, are now under persistent threat. Similarly, State Duma deputy Andrei Gurulyov stated that Russia’s vast territory makes comprehensive air defense impractical, adding that available forces are overstretched and insufficient to form a continuous protective shield. This expanding capability has also enabled Ukraine to launch some of the largest drone swarms seen in the war. One of the most significant occurred overnight Wednesday to Thursday, when an estimated 250–300 drones entered Russian airspace. Russia’s Defense Ministry said it intercepted 238 of them, mainly over southwestern regions, the eastern Black Sea, the Sea of Azov, and occupied Crimea.
