Romania to Buy Ready-Built Hisar-Class Corvette from Turkey

Romania will purchase a ready-built Hisar-class corvette from Turkey for its Navy, HotNews reported.

The vessel is intended to help secure Romania’s economic interests in the Black Sea, particularly the Neptun Deep offshore gas platform, which is expected to come into operation in 2027.

The Ministry of National Defense stated that the urgent need for at least one modern warship in the Black Sea prompted the decision to turn to Turkey for a fast-track procurement.

The total cost of achieving operational readiness is estimated at €265 million, excluding the cost of the Naval Strike Missile (NSM) system.

The purchase price for the vessel in its current configuration is approximately €223 million.

Delivery is expected within six months, after which the ship will be upgraded with combat systems ordered by the Romanian Navy.

Sources close to the procurement told HotNews that missile and torpedo systems will be of Western origin and will be integrated once the ship arrives in Romania. The anti-ship missiles will be the NSM type.

If approved by parliament, the vessel will be the first Hisar-class patrol corvette in Romanian service.

The ship in question is the TCG Akhisar (P-1220), launched in 2023 and commissioned by the Turkish Navy in December 2024.

The vessel is 99.5 meters long, displaces 2,300 tons, and is operated by a crew of 104. It features a combined diesel-electric propulsion system, a top speed of 24 knots (about 45 km/h), a range of up to 8,300 kilometers, and an endurance of up to 21 days.
