An explosion occurred in one of the military garrisons in Khabarovsk Krai, which, according to a number of Russian sources, could have been an assassination attempt on Major General Azatbek Omurbekov .
We are talking about the village of Knyaze-Volkonskoye-1, where on April 28 an explosive device planted in a mailbox on the territory of the unit detonated, writes the Cheka-OGPU .
As a result of the incident, a Russian officer—a lieutenant colonel who commanded a training communications battalion—was killed, and several others were wounded. There is no precise information about Omurbekov’s condition: according to unofficial reports, he may have survived, but this has not been confirmed.
The Russian soldier fought in the war against Ukraine. He is believed to be involved in the murders of civilians in the city of Bucha in the Kyiv region in the spring of 2022. Investigators call Omurbekov the "Butcher of Bucha."
The Cheka-OGPU and Rucriminal.info reported the assassination attempt. Russian authorities have not commented on the incident, and reports of an explosion have not been publicly confirmed. According to preliminary data, the target of the attack was Omurbekov, who has headed the 392nd District Training Center of the Eastern Military District since 2023. His condition has not been officially reported. According to sources, Lieutenant Colonel Kuzmenko, commander of the training communications battalion, died at the scene. Azatbek Omurbekov previously commanded the 64th Separate Motorized Rifle Brigade, which participated in combat operations in the Kyiv region in the spring of 2022.
Ukrainian authorities and media have linked the unit to the killings of civilians in Bucha. Omurbekov himself has been called the "butcher of Bucha" in several publications.
In the summer of 2022, Daniil Frolkin, a serviceman from this brigade, confessed to journalists to the murder of a civilian. He claimed that the command, including Omurbekov, had used violence against their subordinates and distorted information about what was happening. Frolkin was later convicted of "fakes" about the Russian army.
Frolkin’s fellow soldiers also claimed that Omurbekov gave orders to shoot at civilians who were found with mobile phones. Following the events in Ukraine, Omurbekov was awarded the title Hero of Russia. In April 2022, Vladimir Putin awarded the 64th Brigade the honorary title of "Guards."
Omurbekov is subject to sanctions from the US, UK, and the European Union. The US State Department has banned him and his family from entering the country.
It is known that in at least 2023 and 2024, Omurbekov participated in the Victory Parade in Khabarovsk, where he led a column of military equipment.
Earlier, it was reported that an assassination attempt was made on Russian Lieutenant General Vladimir Alekseyev in Moscow . An unknown assailant shot him several times in the back. The high-ranking military officer was hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds.
