The Russian Defence Ministry has revealed the scale of losses incurred to the country’s army as a result of Ukraine’s large-scale Spider web operation targeting Russia’s air defence assets last year. The coordinated operation that destroyed a large number of military aircraft in Russian territory in June 2025, caused financial losses to the tune of 2 billion rubles or $26,7 million, the ministry stated. According to Russian media reports, the figure is included in the files of a criminal investigation handled by the Main Investigative Directorate of Russia’s Investigative Committee. The Insider, citing Kommersant, said the assessment appears in official case documents prepared by investigators. The Spiderweb operation was carried out on June 1 last year, targeting four Russian regions simultaneously – Irkutsk, Murmansk, Ryazan, and Ivanovo. Reports say more than 100 FPV drones were deployed in the assault. The drones were allegedly transported into Russia aboard trucks disguised as carrying ordinary commercial cargo. According to the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the Security Service of Ukraine, 41 aircraft were hit during the attack, with 13 of them being destroyed. These include eight Tu-95MS/Tu-95MSM and four Tu-22M3 that along with the Tu-160 belong to Russia’s strategic aviation. The Russian Defence ministry had downplayed the operation, stating that attack was only partially successful. Russian authorities have charged four truck drivers in connection with the case. Investigators allege the men were part of an organized network involved in the operation. They face charges of terrorism, along with accusations tied to the illegal purchase and transportation of explosive materials. Ukraine’s Security Service of Ukraine organized the covert large-scale mission, code-named “Spiderweb,” with the objective of striking Russian military airfields. Meanwhile, Alexander Bortnikov, head of Russia’s FSB, accused Britain’s MI6 intelligence agency of helping the SBU execute the operation, which reportedly resulted in the destruction or damage of dozens of Russian strategic aircraft. During the operation, Ukrainian drones targeted four major Russian strategic aviation bases: Olenya Air Base, Belaya Air Base, Dyagilevo Air Base, and Ivanovo Severny Air Base. Reports claim that 41 Russian aircraft were struck in the attacks, including Beriev A-50 reconnaissance planes and Tupolev Tu-95 and Tupolev Tu-22M3 strategic bombers.
