Russia is exploring the possibility of introducing 12-hour workdays as part of a broader effort to manage the economic strain caused by the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. According to Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, reports have emerged that a recent discussion between Vladimir Putin and leading Russian billionaires could signal a shift toward much harsher labor conditions, effectively reducing workers to a status resembling modern-day serfdom. Following what was described as a candid exchange with Putin, prominent businessman Oleg Deripaska put forward a proposal that surprised even a public accustomed to abrupt policy ideas. He suggested formally introducing a 12-hour working day combined with a six-day workweek, arguing that such measures are necessary to help the economy withstand the pressure of sanctions. He framed this as part of a national trait -mobilizing and working harder in times of crisis – despite the fact that such a move would conflict with standards set by the International Labour Organization, to which Russia had previously committed. Critics interpret the proposal as evidence that workers are increasingly being treated as expendable resources for sustaining profits. The push for longer hours is seen as tied to growing financial demands placed on major business figures by the Kremlin to support the war effort. Reports suggest that oligarchs such as Suleyman Kerimov, Vladimir Potanin, and Deripaska himself are expected to contribute vast sums. Rather than absorb these costs personally, analysts argue that business leaders may attempt to offset them by increasing pressure on the workforce through longer and more intensive labor.Under this logic, extended working hours would allow companies to maintain output while relying on relatively cheap labor, effectively shifting the financial burden onto ordinary employees. Support for such ideas has also appeared among some establishment figures, including Gennadiy Onishchenko of the Russian Academy of Sciences, who suggested that such schedules are not unusual in sectors like resource extraction. Observers see this as part of a broader shift in thinking toward prioritizing state and military needs over individual rights. At the same time, corruption remains a persistent issue. Reports indicate that by the end of 2025, the average bribe in Russia had risen significantly, alongside an increase in corruption cases, suggesting a widening gap between elites and ordinary citizens. While workers face calls for sacrifice, critics argue that those in power continue to benefit from entrenched systems of wealth and influence. There are also indications that emergency measures introduced during wartime may not be temporary. Federation Council of Russia member Andrey Klishas has suggested that such restrictions could remain in place indefinitely, depending on how authorities define their relevance. Taken together, these developments are portrayed by critics as pointing toward an increasingly controlled system in which economic pressure, legal constraints, and political authority converge. Economic indicators reinforce concerns about strain within the country: declining incomes, rising debt burdens among citizens, and major losses reported by companies such as Rosneft, whose leadership described recent conditions as extremely challenging
