Our stories today:
Negotiators from Kyiv and Moscow are both claiming progress on striking a peace deal in Ukraine, as they meet separately with officials from the United States. Now, Washington is reportedly pushing for all three countries to sit down together, which the Kremlin denies is on the table, with Vladimir Putin also eyeing talks with French President Emmanuel Macron.
Top officials from the International Criminal Court have been found guilty of prosecuting, quote, innocent persons like Vladimir Putin. But there’s one problem: the court in question is based in Moscow, operating in the shadow of the Kremlin itself. The verdict comes as Washington also squeezes the ICC, warning of extra sanctions unless it agrees not to go after President Donald Trump.
It’s not every day that you hear Egypt and Russia in the same sentence, but more than 50 foreign ministers from across Africa have descended on Cairo, alongside the Kremlin’s top diplomat, Sergei Lavrov. At the same time, young men from countries like South Africa are being lured to Russia, signing contracts in untranslated Russian and then, much to their surprise, getting deployed to fight without any military training.
