Ukraine’s top military commander, Oleksandr Syrskyi, has revealed that Russian troops have spent almost a year attempting to seize Kostiantynivka, an industrial city in eastern Donetsk region but have not succeeded, as Ukrainian defenders continue to fend off every assault. Syrskyi explained that Russian forces are trying to strengthen their tactical standing in the area by combining small-unit infantry attacks with large-scale drone strikes. Despite these efforts, Ukrainian units have held their ground for months, consistently blocking advances and causing heavy losses to the attackers. Syrskyi also emphasized that Ukrainian troops remain flexible and responsive to changing battlefield conditions, often making swift and unconventional decisions. He noted that key priorities include targeting Russian supply lines in the rear, eliminating enemy infantry early in their assaults, and minimizing casualties among Ukrainian soldiers despite the intensity of the fighting. Russian tactics in the area combine small, mobile infantry attacks with extensive use of drones, aimed at probing defenses and wearing down Ukrainian lines. Despite this pressure, Ukrainian units have managed to adapt to shifting battlefield conditions, responding quickly and often using unconventional approaches to counter attacks. Their strategy focuses heavily on striking Russian logistics behind the front lines, disrupting supply chains, and targeting enemy troops early in assault phases to prevent breakthroughs. Russia initiated a spring–summer offensive in Donetsk region toward the end of March, with a primary push toward Lyman, a strategically important location that could open routes to Sloviansk and Kramatorsk. Ukrainian officials believe Russian forces aim to capture several major cities in the region, including Kostiantynivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk. Even so, Ukrainian forces continue to resist effectively. For example, marines from the 37th Separate Marine Brigade reportedly repelled the largest assault seen this year near Oleksandrivka. Additionally, Ukraine’s defense leadership indicated that March could mark a record level of losses for Russian forces on the front lines. Despite the scale and persistence of the offensive, Ukrainian forces continue to hold the line. Recent clashes in nearby areas, such as around Oleksandrivka, have included some of the largest assaults of the year, yet Ukrainian units, including marine brigades, have managed to repel them and inflict significant losses. Ukrainian defense officials have even suggested that recent months could prove particularly costly for Russian forces in terms of casualties, underscoring the intensity of the ongoing fighting and the difficulty Russia faces in advancing in this sector.
