Russian battlefield casualties have surpassed the rate at which new soldiers are being conscripted to the ranks of the Russian army for three straight months, Oleksandr Syrskyi, the commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine said on March 13. Syrskyi made the remarks following talks in Ukraine with Mikael Claesson, Sweden’s top military commander. Claesson traveled to the country to hold discussions on defense cooperation and continued military assistance. In a message posted on Facebook, Syrskyi said Moscow continues to press ahead with offensive operations despite the mounting toll suffered by its troops. According to him, for the past three months Russian losses on the battlefield have outpaced the number of soldiers arriving as replacements. The precise casualty figures for either side remain unclear. Nevertheless, an investigation conducted by BBC Russian Service together with the research project Mediazona identified at least 200,186 confirmed Russian military deaths in Ukraine as of February 25. During the meeting, Syrskyi also updated the Swedish commander on the situation along the approximately 1,200-kilometer front line and outlined Ukraine’s requirements for additional weapons and military equipment. He expressed gratitude to Sweden’s government, its monarch, and the Swedish public for their sustained assistance. This includes Stockholm’s recently unveiled 21st package of military aid for Ukraine, which is expected to contain modern air-defense systems, long-range strike capabilities, and ammunition supplies. In addition, Sweden continues to participate actively in a number of multinational initiatives aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s defense sector. These programs cover areas such as the development of Ukraine’s air force and navy, drone technology, armored vehicles, demining operations, and military information technology. Syrskyi noted that collaboration between Ukraine and its NATO partners is helping shape a new security framework for Europe, and expressed optimism that Kyi and its allies will win. Russia has not publicized reports about its battlefield losses in its four-year-war of invasion in Ukraine. However, several Western and analytical estimates suggest that as of early 2026, Russia has suffered around 1.2–1.3 million total casualties, including soldiers killed, wounded, or missing since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022. Within that total, analysts estimate that about 300,000–350,000 Russian troops have been killed, with the remainder wounded or otherwise removed from combat.
