Russian invaders are attempting to expand their occupied control zone in the Sumy region. However, they are located approximately 35 km from the city of Sumy. Joint Forces Group press secretary Viktor Tregubov reported this on the Suspilne radio station. "The situation remains quite tense, as the Russians are attempting to expand their zone of control in the near border area of Sumy Oblast," Tregubov noted. According to him, this concerns the area around the village of Grabovskoye, as well as such settlements as Pokrovka, Popovka, Miropolsk, and others. At the same time, the penetration of Russian occupiers into Ukrainian territory in that border area is small. "The incursion there is about 3-4 kilometers. But it’s already unpleasant that it exists, that they’ve managed to directly enter Ukrainian territory and take control of two small, but populated areas since the beginning of the year," Tregubov noted. As Tregubov explained, the Russian invaders are trying to advance along the entire border "one way or another." "It’s just quite slow and quite shallow, but the attacks are constant. The attacks are constant, there’s constant pressure on our positions," the spokesman clarified. According to him, the majority of Russian troops are located on Russian territory near the Ukrainian border, while a small number of Russian personnel are stationed in Ukraine. "They mainly attack directly from Russian territory," Tregubov noted. He noted that the Russians had been replenishing their personnel during the winter and preparing for an attack campaign. The press secretary reported: "There will likely be another intensification, because right now there’s more greenery. They’ll definitely advance." According to him, the distance from the zone controlled by the Russians to the city of Sumy is 35 km. "Any talk about Sumy being semi-encircled is, let’s say, a bit of unnecessary fuss. And unnecessary escalation," Tregubov emphasized. He noted that Ukrainian defenders are doing everything they can to prevent the occupiers from advancing further: "At the moment they are unable to move forward." As Tregubov noted, there is currently a noticeable increase in Russian activity throughout the entire area of responsibility of the Joint Forces Group. "This applies to both the Yuzhno-Slobozhansky and Kupyansk directions, almost everything except the Velykyi Burluksky direction, because it’s calm there. But in all the others, the Russians are advancing near Vovchansk, and they’re experiencing a serious escalation near Kupyansk, and there’s also a situation near Liman in the Donetsk region. We expected them to begin an active offensive in the spring," Tregubov said. At the same time, according to the speaker, in the Kupyansk area, Russian invaders are seeking to reduce the Ukrainian foothold east of the Oskol River, but ultimately, the occupiers want to capture the city and the railway station. The Russians are trying to seize the initiative in this area, but are losing a lot. The Defense Forces are making great efforts to turn the tide in our favor. According to him, the Russians had previously "gotten it in the teeth" near Liman and had now shifted the main focus of military operations to the Kupyansk region. İn this case by April 2026, Russian forces in Ukraine are experiencing severe exhaustion, with reports indicating they are losing over 40,000 personnel monthly, and struggling to recruit more than 35,000, creating a net deficit, exceeding their recruitment capacity. Despite this, they maintain pressure through attrition, utilizing older equipment and poorly trained recruits, while battling logistics issues and overextended lines. Modern armor is replaced by older, rehabilitated T-62 tanks. Russia is enduring higher soldier losses for smaller gains compared to 2022, sustaining daily losses of up to 1,500 soldiers. Additionally Russia has depleted much of its inherited Soviet-era stockpiles. The prolonged war and constant recruitment are creating financial and psychological strain within Russian regions.
