Russia’s war against Ukraine is increasingly turning into a confrontation between unmanned systems— drones and ground robots—that are changing the very logic of combat, according to The New York Times.
According to the publication, both sides in the war are actively increasing their use of drones, but Ukraine is relying on the widespread use of relatively inexpensive technology to compensate for its shortage of personnel and equipment. Drones, in particular, are already playing a key role on the front lines: according to Ukrainian leadership estimates, they account for up to 80–90% of losses on the front lines.
Meanwhile, a new area is developing: ground-based robotic systems. According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Ukrainian military has already conducted an operation in which an enemy position was captured solely using drones and robots—without infantry and without casualties. In just a few months, such systems have completed over 22,000 missions, reducing risks for the military, the publication writes. According to the NYT, a new battlefield tactic is emerging: aerial drones conduct reconnaissance and strikes, ground robots deliver ammunition and participate in attacks, and operators control everything remotely. This model is gradually replacing classic infantry assaults, the publication notes.
The article emphasizes that Ukraine, despite its fewer resources, was able to adapt more quickly by relying on the speed of technology adoption and its mass production. Russia is also actively using drones, including Iranian designs, and is increasing their production. As a result, warfare is becoming increasingly technologically advanced: the key factors are not the size of the army, but access to technology, the speed of its upgrade, and the ability to scale production.
Defense Express arms expert Ivan Kirichevsky stated that the Russians are already prepared to fight to avoid being attacked by Ukrainian drones. He believes this is a very good precondition for increasing pressure on the enemy at the front. "The enemy has acknowledged the trend that we have parity in the production volume of long-range kamikaze drones, in how they are used, in how they strike… Well, how can they, the Russians, not acknowledge this reality after all these wonderful episodes with multiple attacks on Ust-Luga, then Novorossiysk, and other oil fields?" he noted.
According to the expert, long-range kamikaze drones have become a strategic weapon in our country because, thanks to the successful strikes on the oil industry, the Russians were unable to profit from the war in the Middle East. "Well, of course, they have to acknowledge objective reality," Kirichevskiy said. He said that a Russian center for the analysis of technology strategy wrote on its official blog that, in reality, "things are even much worse," because it doesn’t take into account Ukrainian kamikaze drone strikes on temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine, and only refers to Russia: "That is, they are in such a mood that they are probably turning on Oginsky’s Polonaise and thinking about how, excuse me, they are going to shoot themselves."
BFMTV previously reported that Ukraine, over several years of war with Russia, has built a "drone state ." Production capacity is estimated at up to 10 million units per year, and the observation-decision-action cycle is closed between the frontline and development. Furthermore, a positive trend is that UAVs now account for 80-85% of strikes on the front lines.
