A Russian cargo ship named “Kappa” has run aground near the Istanbul Strait. The 148-meter-long container vessel KAPPA lost steering control while passing through the Bosphorus and eventually ran aground near the Yeniköy neighborhood in Istanbul’s Sarıyer district, coming dangerously close to a waterfront mansion. The vessel, which was traveling from Russia toward Kocaeli after taking on cargo in the Black Sea, reportedly suffered a rudder malfunction that left the crew unable to maintain control. The incident raised fears of a major accident, as the ship stopped only a short distance from the shoreline property. According to reports from Turkish media, rescue teams from the Turkish Directorate General of Coastal Safety along with tugboats and divers, carried out a recovery operation. During the rescue operation, maritime traffic in the Istanbul Strait was temporarily suspended. After the vessel was safely moved to a secure area, traffic through the strait resumed in the morning hours. Due to safety concerns, maritime traffic through the Bosphorus was halted in both directions while rescue operations were underway. After extensive inspections and recovery work carried out by divers and Coastal Safety personnel, the stranded ship was eventually pulled free with the assistance of the tugboats Kurtarma-5, Kurtarma-6, and Kurtarma-8, under the coordination of the Istanbul Vessel Traffic Services Center. Reports also revealed that this was not the first time the KAPPA had encountered serious technical problems in the Bosphorus. In 2022, the same vessel reportedly suffered an engine breakdown near Kandilli, an incident that likewise forced authorities to suspend traffic in the strategic waterway.
