In a secure production facility in central Ukraine, engineers are assembling cruise missiles called "Flamingo." This development could become a key element of Ukraine’s long-range strike system. This is stated in an article in The Wall Street Journal.
The project is being developed by the defense company Fire Point. They previously developed the FP-1 attack drone, which is actively used in attacks on Russian oil infrastructure. The new missile, officially designated "FP-5," significantly exceeds any drone currently used by Ukraine in size and weight. It’s comparable in length to a city bus and weighs nearly 7 tons. Furthermore, the Flamingo carries a warhead weighing over 1 ton, significantly heavier than attack drones, which typically carry warheads weighing approximately 100 kg. The developers claim that the FP-5’s long range and power will allow Ukraine to strike targets far behind the front lines and target key elements of Russia’s military and energy infrastructure. According to Fire Point calculations, the missile’s fuel capacity allows it to travel over 2,800 kilometers, putting it within range of the Russian cruise missiles the Kremlin is using against Ukrainian cities. Kyiv has come to the need to develop such weapons due to the limited effectiveness of drones. Although Ukrainians have carried out over a hundred strikes on Russian oil refineries since August, these facilities are often restored within days, reducing the long-term impact of the attacks. Fire Point believes that only a heavy cruise missile with a powerful warhead can permanently disable such facilities. The project is being developed under severe budget constraints, forcing engineers to seek innovative solutions. Open-source software available online is used to control the rocket, replacing expensive Western systems. The jet engines are taken from decommissioned Soviet aircraft that had been stored in Ukrainian
