Russian athletes participating in the World Fencing Championship in Georgian capital Tbilisi were met with protests. Demonstrations took place in several locations around the city. A group of protesters gathered in front of the hotel where the Russian athletes were staying, chanting slogans such as “Russian pigs, you are not welcome here” and “Today it’s fireworks, tomorrow it might be ‘Grad’ – rocket fire.” The protesters also burned the Russian flag. Another protest took place in front of the sports hall where the competition was being held. The protesters held placards with images of Russian athletes who support Putin, as well as Georgian hero Georgi Antsukhelidze, who died in the 2008 Russo-Georgian War. Two of the protesters managed to enter the sports hall and displayed a banner reading, “Russian soldiers will not be able to rejoice in Antsukhelidze’s homeland.” The competition is being represented by 25 Russian athletes, 17 of whom hold military ranks. The International Federation has allowed the Russian representatives to participate in the event under a neutral status.
