Russian forces are attempting to regain control over Kupiansk by sending infantry groups into the city through a disused gas pipeline, according to Victor Trehubov, spokesperson for the Joint Forces Group, in a comment to Suspilne.
In December 2025, Ukraine’s Defense Forces cleared the northwestern outskirts of Kupiansk, a city which Russian Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov had previously claimed was “captured” in a report to Vladimir Putin. This operation cut off ground logistics for Russian forces that had already entered the city and were attempting to entrench themselves.
The same pipe tactics has been used in Sumy Oblast days ago. According to Trehubov, Russai is also intensifying attacks along the entire contact line on the left bank of the Oskil River bridgehead, attempting to expand the area of pressure.
Particularly intense activity is being recorded toward Kivsharivka, where Russian units are trying to advance in small groups. They are lying that they are already in Kupiansk-Vuzlovyi, but they are flattering themselves too much,” the spokesperson added.
Kupiansk remains a hotspot in 2026. The city is under Ukrainian control, but Russia has renewed intensive pressure from multiple directions. The situation remains tense both on the frontline and in terms of personnel and supply support.
Earlier, Ukraine’s military dismissed the commander of the 14th Separate Mechanized Brigade following a public scandal over four troops reportedly left without adequate food and water on a frontline position on the Kupiansk front.
The General Staff said additional supplies have since reached the affected position, and efforts are ongoing to stabilize logistics, reinforce air defenses, and expand electronic warfare capabilities in the area.
Most often it is via the pipeline, but occasionally by rubber boats: the occupiers are desperately trying to cross the Oskil River to gain a foothold in Kupiansk. Enemy attacks are currently concentrated north of the city and toward the Zaoskillia district. Groups of Russians remain within the city center itself, but they are effectively surrounded and cut off from main forces. Daily small-arms confrontations occur at extremely close distances in Kupiansk. Although massive assaults are fewer than last year, the enemy continues attempts to “infiltrate” residential areas. “Massive assaults are not happening, but the enemy tries to sneak into the most populated areas in small groups. They do not succeed! Only a small number remain there. All logistical routes are completely cut off,” said “Abat,” commander of the 13th Operational Brigade of the National Guard “Khartiia.”
The occupiers entrenched in the city avoid direct combat — they hide in basements and ruins of high-rise buildings, simply trying to survive. Dislodging them from there is extremely difficult.
“The enemy does not reveal themselves until the last moment, until face-to-face contact! They hide. There are shelters and high-rises, which are very difficult to clear,” "Abat" added.
Infantry fighters “Lypa” and “Jordan” have just returned from a continuous combat deployment that lasted over 140 days. They form the “first line” that prevents the enemy from infiltrating the city.
Most of the work — about 95% — is currently carried out by drones. However, when the weather turns bad, the full burden falls on infantry. One of the most exotic routes the enemy takes to Kupiansk is a large-diameter gas pipeline that crosses the Oskil underwater. Russians use the pipe as a tunnel, having dug exits already on the west bank.
National Guardsmen control these "burrows": as soon as an occupier appears on the surface, they are instantly engaged.
