According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the most tense situation remains in the Pokrovsk sector as of the end of the year. Vitaliy Yablonsky, battalion commander of the 152nd Separate Jaeger Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, told Unian what is happening there and how the Defense Forces are repelling Russian attacks.
“The brigade has been stationed in the Pokrovsk sector for almost a year now—a few days shy of a year. The enemy is actively operating in our sector. There’s a lot of close-quarters firefighting going on here. The enemy is also inflicting significant fire damage from drones, artillery, and so on.
But the Russians’ progress in the area where our brigade is located is absolutely zero”, he said.
“There are some parts of forest belts and plantings that were captured, or the enemy entered them. But then the Russians were successfully driven out and destroyed by our forces. This is confirmed by aerial reconnaissance.
Overall, it’s safe to say the enemy is making slow progress. But how? They’re suffering colossal losses. That is, they’re losing a significant amount of personnel and human resources, but they’re advancing meter by meter. Why do Russians need this? It’s important to them, because it’s a springboard for them to move on”, he added.
He says that it’s not advantageous for the Russians to fight in the fields; we’re successfully destroying them there. “”Consequently, they’re interested in moving into metropolitan areas where there are basements and shelters that don’t require digging or building themselves. They move in, accumulate, and then move on.
For them, capturing such agglomerations is a success. And it’s a normal situation when we’re sitting in our fields and they’re sitting at home. Considering that winter is approaching, it’s important to secure every inch of this territory, both for them and for us”, fighter added. “Their motivation is unknown. But they can move across a single field for, say, a month. In small groups. And within that month, they’ve already accumulated into squads, platoons, and companies. True, they’re already in a dead state. They simply have one monster to whom they need to report successes. But there aren’t any—at least, what we see shows that this entire enemy advance isn’t achieving much. Yet every high-ranking official in the Russian "packs" and structures reports to their superiors that "we’re having success." Everyone lies, spins fabrications to show that they’re advancing successfully.
But even if they gather their entire "flock" from all directions, they might be able to take Pokrovsk in about a year. They’ll need at least a year for that. But I don’t think they’ll expose every area, every direction they’re trying to attack… My job as a battalion commander is to inflict maximum fire damage on the enemy and prevent them from advancing in the areas for which I’m directly responsible. And I think we’re effectively wearing the enemy down here right now. This is necessary so that later, the senior commanders, so to speak, can formulate a plan of action and execute it properly. And only then can they launch some kind of counteroffensive, counterattack, or counterattack”, he added
