As of the first half of May 2026, the command of the Russian occupation army had amassed a force of over 100,000 troops in the Pokrovsk sector of the Donetsk region. The "East" Forces Group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported this on Facebook. According to the Vostok Guards, the situation in the Pokrovsk sector remains tense. Fighting is ongoing near the villages of Rodinske, Novoaleksandrivka, Grishino, Pokrovsk, Vasilyevka, Udachnoye, Muravka, and Molodetskoye. The Ukrainian Armed Forces Command estimates the enemy’s presence in this sector of the front at over 100,000 troops. According to the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, yesterday, May 12, Russian occupiers attacked Ukrainian Armed Forces positions 32 times in the Pokrovsk sector. Ukrainian soldiers repelled all attacks. During the three-day ceasefire, which lasted from May 9 to 11, 2026, Russian occupiers were active and regrouped in Pokrovsk and Myrnohrad, as well as on the approaches to these cities. In the Pokrovsk sector, the occupiers are attempting to completely capture Pokrovsk and Mirnohrad, as well as establish control over Grishino. This small but important settlement is located just north of Pokrovsk. The enemy is attempting to consolidate its position in Grishino, and small-arms fighting is ongoing. According to the 7th Rapid Reaction Corps of the Ukrainian Airborne Assault Troops, the Russian occupiers have redeployed their 90th Tank Division, which they refer to as the "Guards" or "elite" division, to the Pokrovsk area. This indicates that the enemy plans to continue its offensive in this direction.
Russian troops didn’t stop even during the so-called "ceasefire," but the Ukrainian defenses failed to collapse. During the three days of the "ceasefire", the occupiers lost over 2,600 soldiers , advancing only a few kilometers. Each new offensive by the Russian Federation turns into a death trap for the Ukrainian Armed Forces: there is movement, but the price is too high.
According to military expert Alexander Kovalenko , the Russians are applying pressure along almost the entire front line, trying to probe positions and create local problems. "On the front, Russian troops lost more than 2,600 soldiers in three days, advancing only a few kilometers. Despite the insane pressure from the occupiers on the eastern flank and near Pokrovsk, the Ukrainian defense continues to exhaust the defensive line, turning every offensive into a bloody trap," he writes. The enemy has only tactical advances that do not turn into a major breakthrough. The pace of Russian troop advance remains minimal—approximately 1–2 km per day. Meanwhile, losses remain consistently high—almost a thousand occupiers per day, Kovalenko adds. Russia’s armored potential has long been depleted, so the Russian command is throwing men forward without cover, making them easy targets for drones.
Ukraine previously outlined a strategic goal of inflicting 50,000 casualties on the Russian army per month, and by the beginning of 2026, these figures were recorded as having been achieved or close to them in certain periods. According to data from the Main Intelligence Directorate and independent analysts, the rate of recruitment of new contract soldiers in the Russian Federation in 2026 decreased to 800-1000 people per day, which confirms the thesis that the level of liquidation exceeds the influx of reinforcements.
