The Russian vessel Ursa Mayor, which sank in December 2024 off the coast of Spain, may have been carrying a classified nuclear cargo destined for North Korea. An investigation indicates that two submarine-powered reactors were on board. CNN reports this. The Ursa Major incident remains one of the most closely guarded secrets of recent times. It is suspected that the sinking may have been the result of Western intervention to disrupt the transfer of nuclear technology to Pyongyang. The flight began just two months after North Korean troops were dispatched to support Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This heightens suspicions of a large-scale technology deal between Moscow and North Korea. Officially, the vessel was carrying empty containers, cranes, and two massive hatch covers. It departed the port of St. Petersburg on December 11, bound for Vladivostok. The dry cargo ship was escorted in the Mediterranean by the warships Ivan Gren and Alexander Otrakovsky. On December 23, the crew unexpectedly sent a distress signal after a series of explosions near the engine room. When Spanish rescuers arrived to help, the Russian ship Ivan Gren warned them to keep their distance. Shortly after the flares were launched, four more powerful explosions were heard over the site of the accident. At that moment, Spain’s national seismic network recorded pulses characteristic of underwater mines. Shortly thereafter, the vessel sank completely. The surviving crew members were taken to Cartagena for questioning by Spanish police. Under pressure from investigators, the captain confessed that the hatch covers were actually nuclear reactor components. According to him, the cargo was intended for submarines and did not contain nuclear fuel at the time of transport. It is not yet possible to physically verify this information. Flight data confirms that American radiation reconnaissance aircraft flew over the sinking site twice. These aircraft specialize in detecting isotopes in the atmosphere to identify nuclear incidents. A week after the crash, a Russian reconnaissance ship visited the wreckage. Following this visit, additional explosions were recorded at the site. Four days after the incident, the ship’s owner, Oboronlogistics, claimed the vessel was struck in a “targeted terrorist attack,” leaving a 20-inch by 20-inch hole in its hull. The US military has also deployed its WC135-R “nuke sniffer” aircraft over the scene of the incident twice, once on Aug. 28, 2025, and again on Feb. 6 of this year, according to flight data. The US has not said why the aircraft was deployed to the Spanish coastline or if anything had been detected during the two flights. With multiple governments remaining silent over the incident, it remains unclear what exactly Ursa Major was hulling or how it sank to the bottom of the sea.
