Recently, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrsky reported that the situation in the Pokrovsk, Konstantinovsk, and Limansk directions has worsened over the past month.
The enemy’s strategic objective is the complete occupation of the Donetsk region. The enemy is intensifying its combined attacks on the largest fortress cities of Donbas: Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, Konstantinovka, and Druzhkovka. The urban and industrial development area of the four largest cities of the Slovyansk-Kramatorsk agglomeration is more than four times the area of Bakhmut and more than seven times the area of Pokrovsk, according to military and political analyst Dmitry Snegirev.
Before the fighting, the average population of major industrial cities in the Donetsk region was up to 90,000, while Kramatorsk and Sloviansk had 147,000 and 105,000, respectively. The war reduced these numbers almost by half. As of March 27, 2026, according to the Donetsk OVA Strategic Communications Directorate, Kramatorsk had a population of approximately 58,000, and Sloviansk, approximately 41,000.
It’s worth noting that the enemy’s military campaign to capture Bakhmut, a city of 71,000 people, lasted nine months. The Russians spent another 22 months trying to capture Pokrovsk, a city of 60,000 people.
Russian occupation forces are launching dozens of guided and high-explosive air strikes on Kostiantynivka every day, reducing residential areas to rubble. FAB-3000s are effectively destroying the city, leaving little hope for the civilian population.
According to the Donetsk Regional Police, more than 2,500 local residents remain in Kostiantynivka. Currently, the town has no gas, water, or electricity, and only one fire safety point and two wells.
Entering the city with humanitarian aid or to evacuate people is now almost impossible, as the enemy is firing on all access roads. Because of this, police units and government officials are unable to enter Kostyantynivka. The only way to reach Kostyantynivka is on foot, but even this remains extremely risky, as the area is under constant Russian drone surveillance.
In addition to FABs, the occupiers actively use cannon and rocket artillery, as well as drones. Their tactical advantage lies in their control of the commanding heights in both Chasovy Yar and Toretsk, while Kostyantynivka is located in a lowland. This significantly complicates the Ukrainian defenders’ task, as the enemy gains fire control over the city itself and Ukrainian Defense Forces locations.
However, this poses the greatest danger to the civilian population. Evacuation is virtually impossible. The enemy controls virtually all access roads. Ukrainian Defense Forces troops are being deployed to evacuate local residents. In recent days, the occupiers have increased pressure on Ukrainian defenders from the Stupochki area toward the northeastern districts of Kostyantynivka. Furthermore, the enemy has expanded the gray zone in this area.
In the Limansk direction, the main fighting is concentrated around the strategically important town of Rai-Aleksandrivka, a key location for the Ukrainian Defense Forces. Fighting is currently ongoing in the forest belts near this area.
Rai-Aleksandrivka is located a short distance from Slovyansk and Kramatorsk. This creates the preconditions for the enemy to use cannon and rocket artillery to strike these cities. The fact that Slovyansk is already within the strike zone is evidenced by the shutdown of the Slovyansk Thermal Power Plant, which supplied electricity to Ukrainian-controlled areas of the Donetsk Oblast.
Currently, the Ukrainian Defense Forces are actively carrying out counterattacks to halt the occupiers’ advance, primarily in the direction of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk.
