Russia has prepared to evacuate its personnel from Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant in the event of a military escalation between Tehran and Washington. Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev made a corresponding statement, reported by Russian media.
A US strike on Iran’s nuclear facilities in June last year did not target Bushehr. Likhachev warned at the time that an attack on the site could trigger a catastrophe comparable to the 1986 Chernobyl nuclear disaster.
Likhachev said: "We sincerely hope that the parties to the conflict will uphold their commitments regarding the inviolability of territory of Bushehr. But, as they say, we are keeping our finger on the pulse and, in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Defence, we will be ready to carry out evacuation measures if necessary."
Last year, the Kremlin announced that hundreds of Russians were working at the plant. Russia is currently constructing new nuclear facilities at the Bushehr nuclear power plant.
The warning comes days after U.S. President Donald Trump urged Iran to negotiate or face a far stronger follow-on strike, and as Tehran reiterated both its openness to talks and its readiness to retaliate. Bushehr is Iran’s only operating nuclear power plant and hosts hundreds of Russian specialists, President Vladimir Putin said last year. Russia also is building additional nuclear facilities at the same site.
Russia supports Tehran’s right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, and Iran continues to deny seeking nuclear weapons. Still, the presence of “hundreds” of Russian workers at Bushehr adds a direct human stake to any military escalation.
Trump renewed pressure on Tehran, urging it to “come to the table” and renounce nuclear weapons, warning that any next U.S. attack would be “far worse” than previous strikes.
Amid threats from US President Donald Trump against Tehran, Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps announced military maneuvers in one of the world’s key energy hubs – the Strait of Hormuz. According to Al Arabiya , citing Iranian state television, the IRGC Navy will conduct live-fire exercises in the strait on February 1 and 2. This week, the IRGC Naval Commander-in-Chief’s political deputy, Mohammad Akbarzadeh, effectively reiterated the possibility of closing the Strait of Hormuz—a threat Iran has repeatedly voiced in the past but never carried out. At the same time, he added that Iran has no interest in global economic upheaval. "We don’t want the world economy to suffer, but the Americans and their supporters will not benefit from the war they start ," he said.
Recall, the United States considers the threat of an Iranian attack on American troops in the region to be real and is considering a preemptive operation against the Islamic Republic. As US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated at a Senate hearing , Washington does not rule out a preemptive strike against Iran in the event of a threat of attack on American forces stationed in the Middle East.
