Recently, Iraq was hit by unknown suicide drones that struck a number of strategic targets in the country, despite the presence of 24 Russian Pantsir-S1 anti-aircraft missile and gun systems. These systems, which form the basis of Iraq’s air defense, proved unable to repel the attack. According to Defense Post, the strikes targeted radar stations at the Taji military base and the Imam Ali air base near Dhi Qar. One of the drones fell in the immediate vicinity of Baghdad International Airport, where American troops involved in the fight against ISIS are stationed.
Most worryingly, Iraqi forces have not even been able to identify the drones’ launch point, and previous accounts of responsibility for the attack have included the US and Israel. Importantly, this incident was the first after a 12-day closure of Iraqi airspace due to the conflict between Iran and Israel.
The Russian “Pantsirs”, which were supposed to protect strategic objects, have demonstrated complete ineffectiveness against modern kamikaze UAVs, which casts a shadow on their combat capability in modern conditions.
Defense Express writes that this case is a serious signal for countries that still rely on Russian air defense, because even with air control and combat readiness, the result was zero. It is worth noting that Iraqi airspace was closed for all 12 days of hostilities between Iran and Israel. Therefore, the above-described raid by unknown drones was the first such incident for Iraq itself.
Based on the above statements by Iraqi officials, it is unlikely that there was any agreement here, according to which unknown drones would have flown in and struck government targets without hindrance. Therefore, the incident can be qualified as the 24 Russian Pantsir-S1s available in Iraq proved ineffective in repelling the attack of the suicide UAV, which could not even track the launch point.
In parallel, Iraq has already contracted new KM-SAM air defense systems from South Korea — likely as a reaction to the limited effectiveness of Russian counterparts.
” Pantsir-S1 ” is a Russian short-range anti-aircraft missile and gun complex used to protect military and strategic facilities from air attack.
Russia claims that the system is capable of engaging air targets at ranges of up to 20 kilometers and altitudes of up to 15 kilometers. Its 57E6 missiles are complemented by 30 mm automatic cannons, allowing it to engage low-flying and close-in targets.
However, despite the claimed versatility, the “Pantsir” have repeatedly demonstrated limited effectiveness. In particular, in Syria, Libya, Ukraine, and Iraq.
