This episode of Ukraine This Week was recorded in Kyiv and Warsaw. In our first interview, we take a brief look at the oil pipeline dispute. We are joined by Agnia Grigas, a senior fellow at the Atlantic Council’s Eurasia Center, who explains how Hungary and Slovakia’s dependence on Russian energy complicates EU funding and support for Ukraine.
Next, we are joined by Shaun Pinner, a former British soldier who moved to Ukraine in 2018 and later joined the Ukrainian Marines. Captured during the defense of Mariupol, Pinner was sentenced to death but was later exchanged for Putin’s friend and oligarch Medvedchuk. Pinner recounts his journey from training Ukrainian forces and fighting on the front lines to enduring brutal captivity, torture, and isolation — highlighting the human cost of war, the psychological resilience required to survive, and the challenges of being used as a propaganda tool.
Since his release, Pinner has continued to support Ukraine through humanitarian work and advocacy, helping to keep global attention on the ongoing war.
