Russian dictator Vladimir Putin is continuing military action despite seemingly favorable peace terms offered by Donald Trump, a decision Western officials say is driven by faulty information reaching the Kremlin, the Financial Times reports. "According to two officials, Russian military and security services regularly provide Putin with reports that inflate the number of casualties in Ukraine, emphasize the country’s resource advantages, and downplay tactical setbacks. While Putin also meets regularly with confidants who explain to him that the war is becoming an increasing drag on Moscow’s economy, the rosy picture painted in military briefings nonetheless leads him to believe he can win the war," the FT writes. Still, Russia’s disinformation campaign has done a "very good job" of convincing "most people around Trump that it’s winning quickly," said Keir Giles, a Russia expert at Chatham House. The main figure responsible for keeping Putin informed about the war was Valery Gerasimov, the Chief of the Russian General Staff and the overall commander of the invasion. As the war dragged on, he and then-Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu became targets of anger from radical pro-war advocates, who accused them of concealing the reality from Putin and relying on a "meat grinder" tactic that resulted in heavy casualties.
