Sochi came under a drone attack while Russian dictator Vladimir Putin was in the city on a visit, delivering a speech at the Valdai Forum, The Moscow Times reports.
According to the outlet, airports in Sochi and Gelendzhik were closed. Half an hour later, Sochi Mayor Andrey Proshunin confirmed a drone attack.
Posts on social media indicated that air defense systems tried to shoot down drones over the sea, while sirens and explosions were heard.
Dmitry Plishkin, head of the federal territory Sirius in Krasnodar Krai, also reported the attack.
The drone threat in Sirius and Sochi was lifted approximately 30-40 minutes after the drone attack began, according to the article.
Meanwhile, the Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have allegedly destroyed 11 drones over the Black Sea and four more targets in the temporarily occupied Crimea on the night of October 2-3.
On the same day, Putin spoke at the plenary session of the Valdai Club in Sochi. The Russian leader’s speech and the question-and-answer session lasted almost four hours. During his speech, Putin responded to US President Donald Trump’s remark that Russia is a paper tiger. He effectively challenged NATO, calling on the Alliance to deal with this paper tiger. The Russian leader insisted that Russia is not a "paper tiger," as US President Donald Trump called it. He even compared Russia to NATO, effectively challenging Western countries and the American President.
"If Russia is a paper tiger, then what is NATO?.. Go ahead and try to deal with the paper tiger," Putin said. On September 30, US President Donald Trump confirmed during a meeting with American generals and admirals that he had told Putin that Russia is a paper tiger.
"I said to him, ‘You know, you don’t look good. You’re four years fighting a war that should have taken a week. Are you a paper tiger?’" the US President said.
With this, Trump publicly reaffirmed his statement from September 23, when he first compared Russia to a paper tiger. Trump made this statement because, according to him, Russia has been fighting aimlessly for more than three years and has achieved minimal success at the cost of enormous losses.
