The failure of President Vladimir Putin’s occupation policy in Russia has forced the Kremlin to start a new propaganda. It seems that Putin understands the possibility of capturing new territories and is therefore preparing to stop the occupation policy. Even ordinary Russians are now speaking out more strongly against the occupation of new territories in Ukraine. Putin is forced to take this into account. In this case Ukrainian journalist Denis Kazansky has drawn attention to a new Russian propaganda line, which claims that Russia is no longer interested in Odessa. According to the propagandists, the city is "unnecessary" because it’s "run by Bandera," and Russia has Rostov instead. This position was voiced by renowned Kremlin spokesman Armen Gasparyan on Vladimir Solovyov’s show, who declared, "Why do we need Odessa? Our Rostov is better!" He argued that anyone nostalgic for the Odessa of the past should reconsider their views, as the city has changed significantly and no longer gravitates toward Russia. These words provoked an ironic reaction from Kazansky, who emphasized that this was a rare case when he was ready to fully agree with the propagandists. The journalist sarcastically noted that if Russia finally stops viewing Odessa as an object of its imperial fantasies, it will only benefit not only Ukraine but also Russia itself. Kazansky draws attention to the futility of Putin’s entire Russian policy toward its neighbor. After all, in all Ukrainian cities, including Odesa and Kherson, Russians were and are not welcome. And Donbas, about whose "defense" Russian propaganda has been spinning for years, has turned out to be of no use to Moscow – now the region is literally perishing.
"Putin is playing for time," says Mikhail Alexseev, a professor of political science at San Diego State University, whose research is currently focused on the war in Ukraine. "Obviously, Russia has been suffering significant losses of manpower and equipment … they need time to regroup." Remarkably, Ukraine has held its own on the battlefield despite being outnumbered and outgunned by Russian forces. "It’s not only that we survived the [2022 invasion], which is a miracle … it’s the fact that after three years, we are still fighting," Dmytro Kuleba, who served as Ukraine’s foreign minister for much of the war, tells.
Military aid from NATO countries, especially the U.S., has been a bulwark of Ukraine’s defense, he says, but acknowledges that it was a big mistake for his country not to ramp up its defense production after Russia invaded Crimea in 2014. "We wasted a lot of time in internal discussion and fights," he says. The figure for Russian casualties is unverified, but most experts in the West agree that the Kremlin’s losses are massive.
