Large-scale fire broke out at at China’s 1,500-year-old Yongqing Temple in Zhangjiagang, Jiangsu province, on November 12. The historic site was damaged as flames tore through a multi-storey pavilion within the complex and destroyed the pagoda, raising concerns over the loss of cultural heritage. Video footage circulated in social media shows large clouds of smoke and raging flames in the temple. The fire has been largely brought under control and no casualties reported so far, according to local authorities. Officials confirmed that the main temple structure remains intact, with restoration work expected to take months. The cause of the blaze is being investigated. Dating back to the Southern Dynasty period, Yongqing Temple is one of Jiangsu’s oldest sites, drawing pilgrims and tourists.
